Best Phone Deals Under £20 a Month UK (2026 Guide)

By the Smart Comparison editorial team · October 2026

A phone deal "under £20 a month" is a budget, not a price. The number in the advert is usually the starting monthly payment for the handset and the airtime together. It often leaves out what you pay today, how many months you are locked in, and whether that monthly figure goes up before the contract ends.

This guide shows how to turn that headline into a total cost. The worked examples were checked against live UK phone deals at the time of writing (15 Oct 2026). The cards below are loaded from the live catalogue, so they can move after that date.

Quick takeaway

Treat £20 as the ceiling for the whole deal, not the sticker. Add the upfront payment, multiply the monthly price by the term, and add any rises the contract already spells out. If that total is higher than buying the phone and a separate SIM, the contract is not the cheap option.

Best next step: open live phone deals and check upfront cost, length, and the price-rise line before you compare two "under £20" offers.

Phone deals under £20 right now

One available contract per handset, with a monthly price under £20, at least 10GB of data, and upfront cost of £30 or less. Ordered by upfront plus the monthly price times the term, lowest first. Confirm the rise line on the phone page before you pay.

What we checked on 15 Oct 2026

These figures are a snapshot, not a promise that the same offer is still there. They matched the phone pages on that date.

  • →Motorola Moto G06, iD Mobile: £8.99 a month, 25GB, 24 months, £0 upfront. The card showed a rise of £1.80 a month, to £10.79. The 24-month total at the starting price was £215.76, and that page called it the lowest total, not only the lowest month.
  • →Motorola Moto G15 and OPPO A6x 4G, also iD Mobile: £8.99 a month, 24 months, £9 upfront, with the same £1.80 rise (to £10.79). Each page's cheapest 24-month total was £224.76. Data on those cheapest totals was 30GB on the Moto G15 and 25GB or 30GB on the OPPO.
  • →Samsung Galaxy A17, Three: £7 a month, 300GB, 24 months, but £125 upfront, rising by £2.30 a month to £9.30. Total at the starting price: £293. On that same 5G page, iD Mobile was £11.99 a month, 200GB, £0 upfront, rising by £1.80 to £13.79, total £287.76. Compared with the Three deal at £7 a month plus £125 upfront, that higher iD Mobile monthly price was the cheaper 24-month total. The cheapest A17 total on 15 Oct 2026 was the Galaxy A17 4G on iD Mobile: £9.99 a month, 24 months, £29 upfront, total £268.76 (25GB or 30GB, rising by £1.80).
  • →Samsung Galaxy A17, Vodafone: £19 a month, 400GB, 24 months, £9 upfront, 5G, rising by £2.50 to £21.50. It started under £20 and went over. Networks with phone contracts under £20 in the live catalogue that day were iD Mobile, Three, Vodafone, Talkmobile, giffgaff and O2.

What the £20 headline leaves out

  • →Upfront cost. A low monthly price with a large payment today can cost more than a slightly higher monthly price with nothing upfront. That is the Galaxy A17 5G pair above: iD Mobile at £11.99 a month with £0 upfront, against Three at £7 a month with £125 upfront.
  • →Contract length. 24 months and 36 months are not the same deal. The longer term spreads the handset cost and keeps you tied in. On 15 Oct 2026, 24-month contracts were the usual length under £20. Longer terms were still listed, and they came with an upfront cost.
  • →Airtime versus handset. Some deals are one monthly price. Others charge the phone upfront and bill a plan each month, or show the handset and the plan as separate parts of that monthly price. Read both.
  • →Scheduled price rises. A deal that starts under £20 can cross £20 at the next rise date. On 15 Oct 2026 the Vodafone Galaxy A17 example did, from £19 to £21.50. The clause is on the deal card and the order page, not in the advert headline.
  • →Data and network. A cheap handset on a tiny data allowance, or on a network that is weak where you are, is a poor deal even when the maths works. 5G is not on every plan.

How to get a total cost

  1. Write down the upfront payment, including any "from" small print that assumes a different colour or storage size.
  2. Multiply the monthly price by the full term. Do this again using the price after each rise the contract states, for the months that higher price applies.
  3. Add those figures. That is the amount you are committing to, not the £20 in the title.
  4. Compare it with keeping your current phone, or buying one outright, plus a SIM from live SIM only deals. SIM only vs a phone contract walks through that choice, and when to upgrade covers whether you need a new handset at all.
  5. If you do want a phone but not a long contract, check refurbished versus new, then pair it with a SIM. Light users who only needed cheap airtime should look at SIM only deals under £10 instead of a handset contract.

Price rises on a budget contract

A £20 cap only holds if the contract holds. Many pay-monthly phone deals state an increase during the term, often once a year. At the time of writing (15 Oct 2026), the rises on the under-£20 deals we checked were added to the monthly price on the card: £1.80 on iD Mobile, £2.30 on Three and £2.50 on Vodafone.

Our guide to mid-contract price rises is written for SIM only plans, and the same question applies here: what will this cost in the last months, not the first? If the risen price no longer fits, a shorter term or a SIM only plan is the safer budget.

What to compare on live deals

On live phone deals, shortlist by the handset you actually want, then sort the survivors by total commitment rather than the lowest month-one price. Note the network, the data allowance, and whether 5G is included on that plan. Confirm the rise wording on the order page before you pay. We do not rank these deals by commission.

What this is not

It is not a promise that a deal stays under £20. The worked examples were checked on 15 Oct 2026. The cards above come from the live catalogue and can change. The phone page and the order page are the source of truth for price, data, term and any rise.

Frequently asked questions

Is a phone deal advertised under £20 a month actually under £20?

Not always. The monthly figure often excludes an upfront payment, and it can rise during the contract. Add the upfront cost, multiply the monthly price by the number of months, and include any scheduled rises before you decide it fits a £20 budget. At the time of writing (15 Oct 2026), a Samsung Galaxy A17 5G deal on Three was £7 a month with £125 upfront, while an iD Mobile 5G deal for that handset at £11.99 a month and £0 upfront had the lower 24-month total (£287.76 against £293). The cheapest A17 total that day was the 4G model on iD Mobile, at £9.99 a month plus £29 upfront (£268.76).

Should I take a phone contract or buy the handset and a SIM?

If the phone you have still works, a SIM only plan is usually cheaper. If you need a new handset, compare the contract's total cost with buying the phone outright (new or refurbished) plus a separate SIM. The lower monthly headline is not automatically the cheaper route.

What should I check besides the monthly price?

Upfront cost, contract length, how much data you get, which network it uses, and the price-rise clause. A 36-month plan can look cheaper per month than a 24-month plan while costing more overall, and you are locked in for longer. At the time of writing (15 Oct 2026), 24-month contracts were the usual length under £20. Longer terms were still listed, and they came with an upfront cost.

Do mid-contract price rises apply to phone deals under £20?

Many do. At the time of writing (15 Oct 2026), iD Mobile deals we checked rose by £1.80 a month, Three by £2.30 and Vodafone by £2.50. A Vodafone Samsung Galaxy A17 deal at £19 a month rose to £21.50, so it started under £20 and finished above it. Read the rise line on the deal card and on the order page.

Where do I see live phone deals without stale prices?

On our phone comparison, and on the cards in this guide, which are loaded from the live catalogue. The worked examples were checked on 15 Oct 2026 and will date. Confirm upfront cost, data, term and any rise on the phone page before you pay.
