A no credit check SIM only deal is a monthly mobile plan where the network does not look at your credit history before activating your SIM. You pay each month upfront — or by direct debit after the fact — with no long-term financial commitment and no borrowing involved. Because there is no credit element to the contract, the network has no reason to assess your creditworthiness.
These plans are particularly well suited to people with poor credit history, those who have never had credit in the UK (including people who have recently moved to the country), young adults who have not yet built a credit file, and anyone on a variable income such as a zero-hours or freelance contract. They are also a sensible option if you have been declined elsewhere and do not want to risk further hard searches on your credit report.
The five networks listed on this page — giffgaff, Smarty, VOXI, Lebara and Mozillion — all operate on a pay-as-you-go or rolling monthly model that does not require a credit check. Rather than lending you the cost of a handset over 24 months, these networks simply charge you month to month for your data, calls and texts. The financial exposure for the network is limited to a single month, which means they can take on customers regardless of credit history.
All five are MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators) that run on the infrastructure of the UK's four major networks. giffgaff uses O2's network; Smarty and iD Mobile run on Three; VOXI runs on Vodafone; Lebara and Mozillion use a mix of networks. In terms of coverage and call quality, you are effectively using the same infrastructure as the big four — just at a lower price point.
No. Networks like giffgaff, Smarty, VOXI, Lebara and Mozillion do not run a credit check when you sign up, so there is no credit search on your file. Your credit score is completely unaffected whether you are approved or not.
Possibly, but it is less certain. Networks such as O2, EE, Vodafone and Three do run credit checks for 12 and 24-month contracts. If you have poor or limited credit history, your application may be declined. Rolling monthly plans from these networks sometimes have lighter checks, but the five networks listed on this page are your safest bet if you want to avoid a rejection.
A soft credit check lets the network see a summary of your credit history without leaving a mark on your file — only you can see soft searches. A hard credit check does leave a footprint that other lenders can see, and multiple hard checks in a short period can temporarily lower your score. The networks on this page do neither — they simply do not check your credit at all.
